Anna goes back to Dublin for more
If she was born into her mother's generation she'd end up in one of those evil laundries with the lesbian nuns and so forth, but Anna Friel's character in Watermelon proves that Irish single mums have more fun than that. Unless of course you like the idea of being locked up with lesbian nuns - but I digress.
Friel's character is 21 year old Claire Ryan, a go-getter who drags her boyfriend Adam from Dublin for London on the promise of a great new job with a publishing house. But once they get to the Big Smoke, Adam realises the job is in fact a job interview. His bemusement turns to anger when Claire reveals she threw up during the meeting and has probably blown her chance. Adam goes back home and Claire gets it on with the guy who interviewed her and things look up, especially when she gets a job with the same firm. But then the real reason why she vomited during the interview is revealed.... and Friel promises plenty more plot twists for the viewer.
She says: "I don't like the fact (Claire) lies so much, but if I have done my job correctly, you'll excuse that and empathise with her. There should be lots of people shouting 'Claire, what are you doing?' at the TV. My mum certainly did !"
Despite the London plot, the programme was filmed in Dublin, which holds happy memories for Friel. She says "It is such a welcoming city. You are never short of anything to do in your time off". StarMag recommends the Lesbian Nun Club near Temple Bar....
